I eat pretty healthy so mine didn’t start as early as some people’s do…at least that is the only reason I can think of that mine started late…anyhooo I digress. My hot flashes didn’t start until after the age of 50, and they weren’t super bad to start out. Quick literally I didn’t have them at all until I took a trip with my son for about 2 weeks.

The Trip-Causes Perimenopausal Hot Flashes
We packed up the car, got a tent, some freeze-dried meals like these, the cutest little cooking stove that runs on twigs and can charge your cell phone and hit the road. In all fairness we didn’t camp the whole time. I did stop in with family along the way. But the time we spent camping was awesome!
This is my youngest son and he was doing all three Spartan Races within a couple of week period of time. He had to get them all in in order to get his Trifecta Medal that he wanted. We had to go to Big Bear Ski Resort in Southern California in October for one of the races. This is where we camped out.
We spent days trying to get used to the altitude, we were from sea level and this was considerably higher. We climbed all over the mountain and he hopped on top of huge rocks, climbed trees. Anyway I digress again. The point of this story is that I was away from home. A few days into the endeavor I started noticing that I was getting hot, periodically. It was weird. This had never happened before! It was almost instant upon leaving home. In the middle of the night I would have to take the covers off. Then a few minutes later I would be cold again. AARRRGGG!
I thought, “ok, it’s finally hit me. I’ve finally hit perimenopause. ” Of course, like any woman, I thought I was going to have to get used to them and live with them. I did my best to come to grips with this reality….even though it was super sudden, I thought.
Coming Home-Cured Perimenopausal Hot Flashes
Fast foreword 2 months. We have arrived back home and life has gone back to the normal day to day activities. Suddenly, one day I realized I wasn’t having the hot flashes any more! What!!!!! I thought about it, when had that happened? I rationalized that maybe hot flashes come and go at this point.
About a year later I take another trip. I’m only gone a few weeks and again the hot flashes start up. I assume that they have come back like I thought they would. Upon my return home I monitor them. Hot flashes aren’t something you can just ignore. About 2 months later, with a sort of shock I realize that they are gone again. Ok, so I begin to think this isn’t normal. My mother had hot flashes and she never had any relief from them.
What is different? I few more trips later, and a few more years, I can honestly say I figured it out. Every time I leave home the hot flashes return and they take about 2 months after returning home to leave again. I am writing this after the hot flashes have just dissipated for the umpteenth time, and it has indeed been 2 months since I returned home. It kind of makes not want to leave home, but now I know what is happening.
